Between the infamous Lindisfarne raid in 793 CE and the Norman conquest of 1066, the peoples we now know as the Vikings became one of the most far-ranging and influential civilizations in history. The Vikings are frequently portrayed as raiders, marauding across medieval Europe and Britain, but the culture and society of the medieval Nordic peoples were so much more diverse, multifaceted, and influential than they are often depicted. In 24 Hours in the Viking World, author and Viking expert Kirsten Wolf chronicles an hour in the life of 24 individuals from every corner of Viking society over the course of a single day. From the warrior to the thrall, the shipbuilder to the farmer, the poet to the oracle, each chapter offers a snapshot of the world as it was in medieval Scandinavia and an insight into how these people lived, loved, worked, fought, and died. 24 Hours in the Viking World presents an absorbing, grounded, and tangible look at what it was really like to be alive during this pivotal era in history. Kirsten Wolf is a Professor and Torger Thompson Chair at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A native of Denmark, she received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Scandinavian languages from University College London. She is the author of several books, including Vikings: An Encyclopedia of Conflict, Invasions, and Raids (with Tristan Mueller-Vollmer) (2022), and Viking Age (2013). Hardcover. 272 pages.

Danish Windmill · A shop with a story

Troll testimony

Lots of History and Small Town Charm

“A beautiful, authentic working Danish windmill. I learned not every windmill is the same. Lots of history to learn. Very cool to tour the inside and learn about how it was transported from Denmark. You can tour the inside the windmill and walk up a few floors even walk outside on the catwalk around the windmill. The grounds are well kept and feature a neat Viking house replica. A tiny church. A wooden troll and gnome home. A great gift shop full of Danish imports. I liked that the gift shop had a variety of pamphlets of other interesting things to do around the area.”

Windmill testimony

A Million Stars

“If I could give this place a million stars I would. It is an oasis in Iowa. Here you find an authentic 1848 Danish windmill brought over from Denmark and lot of interesting Danish and Viking cultural items, a fantastic gift shop with a huge selection and things you can't find anywhere else (like Aebelskiver cast iron pans!) and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. What more could you ask for? It's really worth it to make a stop here!”

The Little Winter Book of Gnomes

A cozy book of gnomes (and gnomes), just in time for the holidays Similar to the Norwegian nisser Kirsten grew up hearing about, gnomes have always fascinated her. When she realized that a “gnome” was also another word for a proverb, Kirsten brought the two together. The result is a charming collection of Scandinavian wisdom accented by whimsical illustrations. There are gnome women chopping wood (“chop your own wood and it will warm you twice”), men surreptitiously knitting (“two balls of yarn
