About the maker

Maileg

Maileg was founded in 1999 by Danish designer Dorthe Mailil and her husband Erik. Dorthe's illustrated characters bring together Scandinavian design, gentle humor, and the kind of detail that invites a closer look.

In the Maileg world, a matchbox can become a mouse's bed and a tiny outfit can start a whole new adventure. Mice, bunnies, furniture, and seasonal friends give children room to invent their own stories, while the keepsake quality makes them easy to share with the next generation.

Danish Windmill · A shop with a story

Windmill testimony

A Million Stars

“If I could give this place a million stars I would. It is an oasis in Iowa. Here you find an authentic 1848 Danish windmill brought over from Denmark and lot of interesting Danish and Viking cultural items, a fantastic gift shop with a huge selection and things you can't find anywhere else (like Aebelskiver cast iron pans!) and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. What more could you ask for? It's really worth it to make a stop here!”

Mange Tak

“I love the hospitality of hygge you feel upon entering the Danish Windmill! A friendly staff, a thorough tour of the inner-workings of the windmill itself, and a shopping experience that has both traditional and modern Danish offerings — the Windmill appeals to all ages, and will have you saying, “Mange tak!” ”
